Gigi & Zayn test the Gender Fluid waters & cover the August 2017 Issue of VOGUE
A-list couple and millennial sweethearts, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik, rock head-to-toe Gucci menswear looks on the cover of Vogue’s August 2017 issue. Inside, the magazine boasts about how the spread highlights a “new generation embracing gender fluidity,” a statement which quickly raised some eyebrows, and not in a good way.
The mother of all fashion mags has since apologized for this and a series of insensitive remarks made in the article. This after a slew of social media call-outs criticized the story’s intent and overall ignorance of the subject matter. In a statement to BuzzFeed on (Friday, July 14th), Vogue apologized again saying “The story was intended to highlight the impact the gender-fluid, non-binary communities have had on fashion and culture. We are very sorry the story did not correctly reflect that spirit – we missed the mark. We do look forward to continuing the conversation with greater sensitivity.”
Looking past the politics of it all, the beauty and positivity of the spread, shot by Inez and Vinoodh, is absolutely artful. Gigi and Zayn love to swap clothes and share pieces. The supermodel says she enjoys second guessing gender norms when it comes to her style choices, and Zayn isn’t her only inspiration. It looks like the model also raids little brother, and fellow model, Anwar Hadid's closet for a little inspiration. The two looked stunning in another series of shots for the magazine which we’re sure made for some great family bonding. In the end, embracing equality in any facet is right by us.
